Some schools could be making kids sick with poor cleaning procedures and products

WINSTEAD, CT — Third-grader Matthew Asselin was sick for a large portion of the last school year, missing a total of 53 entire days, according to CNN.com.

For much of the year, Asselin was lethargic and plagued with a persistent wet cough, respiratory infections and painful headaches, and his health continued to worsen as the year progressed, the article stated.

According to the article, when summer hit, Asselin made a full recovery, regaining his energy within a matter of days.

"When we put him back in school this year, within three weeks, he missed 10 days with a respiratory infection," Melissa Asselin stated.

Studies have shown that nearly a third or more of all U.S. schools have mold, dust and other indoor air problems serious enough to provoke respiratory issues like asthma in students and teachers, the article noted.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 10 children in the U.S. now has some form of asthma, causing the student to miss an average of four days of school a year, the article added.
